The Ister is a 3000km journey to the heart of Europe, from the mouth of the Danube river on the Black Sea, to its source in the German Black Forest. Hailed by Scott Foundas of Variety as "a philosophical feast—at which it is possible to gorge oneself yet leave feeling elated,” the film is based on the work of one of the most influential and controversial philosophers of the 20th century, Martin Heidegger, who in 1933 swore allegiance to the National Socialists. By joining a vast philosophical narrative with an epic voyage along Europe’s greatest waterway, The Ister invites you to unravel the extraordinary past and future of ‘the West.’ 189min.

From SPIN: "Three Brooklyn boys with perpetual nervousness launch the '80s Amerindie revival: Michael Pace jams econo-lines onto his Gibson Marauder, Dan Fetherston sprays high-hats and cymbals over a mostly 4/4 gallop, and Adam Rizer proves once and for all that repeated listening to R.E.M.'s Reckoning is a good way to learn how to play bass." With local indie rockers Diamond Sharp back on the scene.

Wilderness is an unconventional band from Baltimore, Maryland, whose
apparent musical pedigree stems from the likes of the Fall, This Heat,
Savage Republic, Public Image Limited and Joy Division--without
sounding like any of them --and whose music is every bit as spiritual
as it is visceral, as nuanced as it is overt, and as communal and
all-embracing as it is culturally alienating and nihilistic. With Micah Blue Smaldone, Portland's reigning arbiter of esoteric folk-blues.

From the World Cup to the mythical mountain kingdom of Bhutan, Words of My Perfect Teacher follows three students on a quest for wisdom. The only catch is the teacher. Soccer obsessed, charismatic filmmaker and citizen of the world, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche may be one of the world’s most eminent Buddhist teachers, but it’s a job description he slyly rejects at every turn. Featuring appearances by Bernardo Bertolucci and Steven Seagal, filmmaker Lesley Ann Patten sets out to make a film about her teacher, Khyentse Norbu, but he soon turns the tables and the film becomes part of the filmmaker’s own quest for spiritual growth. Words of My Perfect Teacher lets us share this quest as we accompany Patten on a personal and intimate adventure.

| 3.21.2008 | Fri | Gallery Opening: The New Constructionists |
5-8pm, free, All ages
SPACE Gallery is pleased to present The New Contstructionists, a drawing show featuring new work by Meghan Brady, Jena Derman, Gina Siepel, and Zoë Wright. While the artists draw on a range of influences, exploring different sets of themes and questions, the works on view all possess a certain “built” quality, employing functions of form and space, symmetry, surface, and pattern to construct drawings from everyday objects and sights familiar. These four artists’ solitary engagements with drawing advance their private experiments in recreating and reimagining.

| 3.22.2008 | Sat | Major Stars with Cult Maze and Baltic Sea |
| Doors open at 9, music begins at 9:30, $7, 18+
Fader Magazine calls Major Stars "the best rock band in the world" and we won't argue. Boston-based Twisted Villagers Wayne Rogers and Kate Biggar added young blood to their lineup with Sandra Barrett (LA Drugs) and former-Portlander Casey Keenan to make "Mirror Messenger", their first album for Drag City. Prepare yourself for hard guitar riffs catapulted into sprawling psychedelia. We pit them with Portland kings of rock, Cult Maze and the carefully composed noise-rock of The Baltic Sea.

Ghettosocks has been touted as one of the hottest properties on the Canadian hip-hop scene. Halifax’s Tony Bennett of the rap game lyrically pushes, shoves, romances, and shoplifts his way on the mic. With tracks entitled "Step to a T-Rex" and "Steal From Wal-Mart" you can be sure you're not going to be saddled with some sort of heavy-handed message. Ghettosocks is the real deal, an MC with an ear for old school and clever song writing skills. A seasoned battler, one of his many titles include, first place in the 2006 DJ Olympics MC Battle. His video, “Step To A T-Rex” was nominated for “East Coast Music Awards Hip Hop Single of the Year ‘07.” Ottawa native, Deejay Frame takes the night out with both classic and rare hip-hop exclusives. Everyone's favorite local red-head Dilly Dilly opens, then joins Sontiago & Gabe FM to complete Portland's most eclectic hip-hop trio.

All three women are piously committed to their faith and their families. Instead of walking away from a religious community, whose leaders insist that God did not create people with homosexual "tendencies" that cannot be overcome; each of these women chooses a unique approach to express both her sexual and religious identities. Director Ilil Alexander will be present at these screenings. * Winner of the Israeli Oscar for Best Documentary. USA, 2004, 52m, in Hebrew with English subtitles. |
