|
Doors open at 9:00pm, music starts at 9:30pm, $7, 18+
Baltic Sea is an experimental rock outfit from Portland that features members of Seekonk, Colepitz and Static Flash. Conifer’s primarily instrumental music takes an approach that’s entirely meditative, with minimal, ethereal passages containing lengthened crescendos of distortion. Boston’s Irepress join the post-rock, progressive hardcore, metal-gaze (take your pick) legions of the early 2000s, bringing an all-instrumental, rhythmically jazz-oriented nuance to the genre’s open-ended, atmospherically complex template, as defined by the likes of Isis, Pelican and Mouth of the Architect.

For over ten years, Ted Leo has been one of the most progressive forces in East Coast independent music, with a unique combination of punk and folk, soul and hardcore, and tradition and experimentation. His newest record, Living with the Living, was released this year on Touch and Go records. KristeenYoung is a piano/keyboard and drums “rock” duo, in the golden years sense of the word, when rock was simultaneously adventurous, original, scary and fun. Think saw-toothed riffs reminiscent of Jimmy Page and tub-thumping, bootknocking drums born of the same era and you’re halfway there. Doors open at 8:00pm, music starts at 8:30pm, $10, 18+. http://www.tedleo.com/news.php |

Michael Almereyda's award-winning documentary WILLIAM EGGLESTON IN THE REAL WORLD reveals the deep connection between photographer William Eggleston’s enigmatic personality and his groundbreaking work, and also reveals his parallel commitments as a musician, draftsman and videographer. Almereyda tracks the photographer on trips to Kentucky, Los Angeles and New York, but gives particular attention to downtime in Memphis, Eggleston’s home base. Eggleston has been called “the beginning of modern color photography” (John Szarkowski, MoMA) and “one of the most significant figures in contemporary photography” (Charles Hagen, NY Times).

Doors open at 7:00pm, film starts at 7:30pm, $6, $5 for members, All ages
The Maine premiere of local filmmaker, Nikolai Fox’s latest film, Music for the Sky, explores a community of eccentric revivalist old-time fiddlers playing southern-style fiddle music in the mountains of Vermont and Western Massachusetts. The film revolves around the personalities of eight musicians – each described in a cinematic portrait. Fox intimately captures the music of this community as it is played informally in a diverse variety of settings while introducing us to this group of viscerally talented and virtually unknown traditional musicians. Followed by discussion with filmmaker Nikolai Fox. |

Doors open at 6:30pm, event starts at 7:00pm, $5, free for members, All ages
When we were teenagers we swore we’d never forget what it’s like to be one. We swore that when we were parents we’d do it differently. But can we ever hope to remember the painful social struggles, the hopeless crushes, or even the simple frustration of not being able to drive ourselves around? Can we really recall how hard it is to grow up? In the latest installment of our “Listening Room” series, local producer Josh Gleason (NPR, This American Life, Weekend America) presents an evening of radio stories made by teenagers, including some from WMPG’s own Blunt Youth Radio - stories about young people dealing with everything from the ordinary to the extraordinary, unrequited love to Tourette’s Syndrome. Featuring live music by Tempera and members of Over a Cardboard Sea. Presented In partnership with the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) http://www.prx.org |
