| 5.4.2007 | Fri | Second Annual Polaroid Print Auction 5:00 – 8:00pm, with the first round of bidding to close at 7:30 pm, free, all ages. Preview some of the images here. |
SPACE presents the follow up to last year’s fantastic Polaroid Print Silent Auction, where beautiful artworks and bargain prices collide to make one of the most exciting art events of the year. Sure, lots of nonprofit organizations hold art auctions to raise money, but SPACE’s event is different in that we just ask the artists for the print, then SPACE frames everything and puts together a gorgeous gallery show. Every print sold generates a profit for SPACE, funding our visual arts program. Your support for the gallery allows us to support the artists! | |||||||

Sol.iLLaquist of sound (soul il e kwist uv sah oo nd) n. 1 A play on words describing an individual whose efforts in searching for one’s self reveal his/her soul to an audience often through some type of art medium. 2 One who recognizes his/her self and the reflection of self in those around them. See also Swamburger, Alexandrah, DiViNCi, Tonya Combs, and Charles Wilson, III. It would be an understatement to call the Sol.iLLaquists of Sound a mere Hip-Hop Band. Their message and ambitious fusion of varied stylistic genres continue to reinvent the perceptions and experience of music as a whole. The Sol·iLLaquists combine rapid-fire lyricism, jazz-tinged vocals, insightful poetry, and innovative live electronic performance. How does artist Matthew Barney (creator of the acclaimed Cremaster Cycle film series) use 45,000 pounds of petroleum jelly, a factory whaling vessel and traditional Japanese rituals to create his latest art project? Barney plowed the waters off the coast of Nagasaki to film his massive endeavor, Drawing Restraint 9. This film journeys to Japan with Barney and his wife and collaborator Björk, as the visual artist creates a “narrative sculpture” telling a fantastical love story of two characters that transform from land mammals into whales. Directed by Alison Chernick. USA, 2006, 70 min. “An astonishingly voluptuous skeleton key to Matthew Barney.” -The Village Voice. http://www.matthewbarneynorestraint.com |

|
Singer Morgan Taylor and his band of musicians cater to an active and often verbally inquisitive audience. They musically narrate the story of Gustafer Yellowgold, a golden alien who comes from the sun, blessed with a magnetism for making friends with some of earth’s odder creatures. It all comes to life in a “moving book” of songs and pictures, projected in full color onto a big screen, with subtitles for early readers. The New York Times called the Gustafer show and accompanying live music “a cross between ‘Yellow Submarine’ and Dr. Seuss, filtered through the lens of the Lower East Side.” Time Out NY Kids magazine called it “Beatlesque...very beautiful.” http://www.gustaferyellowgold.com/ |
