Sara Cox with Toughcats and Melvern Taylor and the Meltones 9p, $7, 18+ |
Sara Cox and the Ghost Band return to SPACE after a long hiatus of songwriting for Sara's new album - her 3rd solo record - due out in early 2007. Once named Portland's best female vocalist, Sara's music is a comforting blend of country-influenced rock and smart, sophisticated balladry. Also appearing are Melvery Taylor and the Fabulous Meltones, known as "the best ukulele band from Lowell, Massachusetts," The Meltones craft brilliant pop songs that feature Taylor’s dreamy voice with deft backing by the band. Toughcats are a trio from midcoast Maine who play a unique brand of rock n’ roll that includes slow waltzes, banjo-pickers and steel guitar rockers. (They’ve also got some bits of bluegrass, pieces of old flannel, a shred of tobacco or two, and a healthy wallop of moonshine.) |

Doc. film: 7:30p, $6 / $5 members, all ages |
"The Chances of the World Changing" is not so much a film about extinction as it is about survival. Writer Richard Ogust has abandoned his life's work to care for the 1,200 endangered turtles he shares his New York penthouse apartment with. Many are the last of their species, rescued from Southeast Asian food markets and kept alive only by Ogust's diligence and patient tending. But his ark is sinking. Trying to appease unhappy neighbors, state environmental agencies and the looming threat of bankruptcy, Ogust strives to find a balance between the preservation of dying species, and the preservation of his own collapsing world. The Enchantments w/ The 500s and Tempera 9p, $5, 18+ |
The Enchantments, sharing members with both other two bands, will decorate your living space tastefully with some of the finer strands from the tattered old indie rock taspestry, pausing periodically to make a huge mess of the place with feedback and noise. The 500s play concise pop gems loaded with an entire summer's worth of handclaps and choruses that practically insist on being shouted out the window of a moving car. Come for the fancy guitar tone, stay for the teeny tiny drum kit. Tempera builds a nest made out of bells, oohs and ahhhs, chunks of sound, and delay loops. Unlike many seasonal birds, they have decided to remain in our northern climate for the winter, provided you curl up with them and lend your body heat. |

Moss Mountain Project CD release with Dead End Armory 9p, $6, 18+ |
These sounds coming from a little ranch house in Windham: a drumbeat, insistent and maniacal, the jangling of bone on steel string, a low moan and a shrill cry. Drawing from an endless well of Wild Mercury is Tim Ouillette, the singer and the guitar player, bent over his cutaway acoustic guitar and a lonely microphone. Jeff Harmon, the drummer, smirks as he lays down the groove. Peter Hill, just a drifter who shaved his face and pawned it all for his bass guitar, has his head held high. Also featuring Dead End Armory, who have quickly established themselves as a serious creative force in the Northeast Indie music scene. With the ingenuity and diversity of Built To Spill, Dead End Armory encompasses what every music listener wants – driving rhythms, moving melodies and enchanting lyrics. Using subtle rhythm shifts and tempo progressions to keep the music interesting, the band manages to bring a pop-like coherence to the sound with powerful lyricism and backing vocals. |

Alex Feldman’s endearing character keeps his audience laughing at a non-stop stream of surprises, all presented in the imaginary language “Grammelot” – a strange sounding gibberish that slips between silly and soulful. Alex has performed at theaters from Alaska to Arizona, on Showtime, The Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, The World Performance Festival in Japan, and The Singapore Arts Festival. Iman Lizarazu is a world-class juggler, a classically trained ballet dancer, mime, and physical comedian, a jester and a fool in the best, old-world sense of the word. When the simplest of tasks turns into the grandest of ordeals, Daniel Forlano persists despite insurmountable odds-revealing great skill and humor-to achieve what would normally be a simple task. Kino Proby, Someday Driver and MegaCity 9p, $5, 18+ |
Viktor Odin and Viktor Dva mourned Viktor Tsoy's tragic 1990 death for close to 15 years, finally deciding to bring a sense of closure by paying homage to Tsoy (and his band KINO) by starting KINO PROBY. Bringing Tsoy's music, and the sound of KINO, into the 21st century, they felt, would help keep Tsoy alive for now and eternity. KINO PROBY started out small, playing local Open Mics, street corners, and living rooms in the coastal town of Portland, Maine. Now KP has begun to extend its Tsoy-loving network south to Boston and soon will voyage forth to NYC, Philly, DC, Tierra del Fuego, Murmansk, Katmandu. To help rock you harder, Viktors Odin and Dva were lucky enough to meet Viktor Tri, whose hard rock drumming makes KINO PROBY even better. |
