Doc. Film / Discussion: 7:30p, $5 suggested |
America's prison population is swelling at an alarming rate -- tripling in just fifteen years. Education in prison has proven to be one of the few effective tools for turning an inmate's life around. So why have federal and state governments rushed to cut off funds for effective college prison programs? "The Last Graduation" frankly explores the issues involved in this vital question --from the advent of higher education in prison in the wake of the 1971 Attica uprising to the last graduation from the Marist College program at Greenhaven Prison in 1995. A community dialogue with social justice artist/activist Michael Keck follows the screening. Directed by Barbara Zahm. |

1-Speed Bike and Paul "The Beat Mechanic" Bosse 9pm, $7, 18+ |
When he is not yelling at strangers during live electronic performances, or making up ironic rap groups that would offend the most open minded of folks, the sometimes godspeed you! black emperor drummer Aidan Girt makes really good music under the moniker of 1-Speed Bike. Agressive drum play and programming over soft melodys with interesting layers of electronics that build and fall and build again. It is kind of like the Montreal version of chopped and screwed, but kind of not. Opening performance by The Beat Mechanic Paul Bosse, a mastermind of percussion utilizing found objects and modified metal. |

Melissa Ferrick with Ryan Montbleau 9pm, $15adv/ $17.50 dos, 18+ |
Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Her major breakthrough came when Morrissey invited her to open for him during a tour, earning her a small cult following as well as a contract with Atlantic Records. On her latest release and seventh album, "The Other Side," Ferrick gets in touch with her inner control freak, producing, arranging, recording, mixing, and playing every note. That sound you hear isn't a train wreck; it's her manic, percussive guitar and jittery drumming pushing her strongest set of songs over the edge of polite folk confines. Ryan Montbleau is building a bridge between 70's soul, ragtime, blues-folk-Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter vibe of artists like Martin Sexton, David Gray and Ray Lamontagne. |

Two Dollar Guitar w/ Chris Brokaw 9pm, $5, 18+ |
Two Dollar Guitar began in 1992 when Tim Foljahn, armed with a book full of damned, heavy soul ballads inspired by both his psycho-spiritual and actual physical travels, recruited his friend Steve Shelley to help animate them for public consumption. The music mines a sound and vision based on traditions found in the work of fellow twisted classicists Nick Cave, Townes Van Zandt, Serge Gainsbourg, Lee Hazlewood and Leonard Cohen. Chris Brokaw contributed his expertise on guitar and drums to the bands Come and Codeine before striking out on his own as a solo act. He also had contributed to recordings by Steve Wynn, Pullman, the Willard Grant Conspiracy, and the New Year, among others. His first solo recording, on Acuarela and Kimchee Records, was a split EP with the Spanish group Viva Las Vegas. |

Cult Maze with Citadel and Tempera 9p, $5, 18+ |
Tempera will start the evening playing acoustic and electric guitars, hand bells, sometimes a harp, clinking jars, singing bowls, tuning forks, recorders, a flute and fife, and technologies - pedals, keyboards, secret technologies, too - using these tools to play "islands" of composed songs. Next is Citadel, draped in velvet & paisley sounds play psych/ acid rock that brings to mind Cream, Jefferson Airplane and the Pretty Things. Ending the show will be Cult Maze aka "the hottest band in Portland and if you haven't seen them yet, you better see them now" who take swagger rhythms and super synth power to make beautiful pop songs that feel like a soundtrack for autumn. |
