Moneycastasia and Ouija Radio 8:30, $5, 18+ |
The fantasy and magic of life is what makes Ouija Radio so unique. Crafty songwriting, a dose of witchcraft, intriguing sex appeal, and a tremendous amount of rock action are the elixirs for this potent cocktail. This is not your average power pop rock band--they’re a powerful female fronted rock group that isn’t afraid to delve into a little spellbinding to get the job done. Moneycastasia are Portland based, playing robo-jazz, deconstructionist sounds, transcendent over an array of noisy, complex beats. |

First Friday: Kids with Cameras 5-8p, Free, All ages |
At last year’s Human Rights Watch
Traveling Film Festival, SPACE screened the Academy Award winning documentary
film Born Into Brothels, which documents the work of photographer Zana
Briski teaching children of prostitutes in Calcutta’s Red Light
District. This year, in conjunction with a new lineup of films for the
2005 festival, we’ll host an exhibit of photographs by the children
featured in the film. These 20 hauntingly beautiful photographs demonstrate
a heartening ability to find humanity. 100% of the sale price of the photos
will go to Kids With Cameras, an organization which works to provide education
opportunities to children in Calcutta. The exhibition is sponsored in
part by Coffee By Design and The Whole Grocer. |

Film: Born into Brothels 7:30p, $10 (benefit), All ages |
The most stigmatized people in Calcutta’s red light district are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother’s fate or for creating another type of life. In Born into Brothels, directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children they come to know in the red light district. Briski, a professional photographer, gives them lessons and cameras, igniting latent sparks of artistic genius that reside in these children who live in the most sordid and seemingly hopeless world. This screening helps raise funds to cover the costs of hosting the Kids With Cameras exhibit. Many thanks to the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies for generously sponsoring our presentation of the film. |
