| 6.01.05 | Wed | Richard Buckner with Anders Parker and Darien Brahms 8:30p, $8, 18+
|
Richard Buckner's voice is a deep brown warble that sounds as if it were fashioned from the same stuff as the earth itself, infusing every word, every syllable the man utters with emotional freight. Anders Parker is known for his work as frontman for Varnaline, and now he's touring to support a new solo album. (One review says the "band was proving impossible to categorize, except by saying, as many did, 'Damn this Anders Parker guy can write a song.'") Local diva Darien Brahms opens with her star drummer Ginger Cote. |

| 6.02.05 | Thurs | Stinking Lizaveta with Darediablo and Money Castasia 8:30p, $6, 18+ |
Calling the decade-old Stinking Lizaveta simply an instrumental trio is like saying Malcolm X had a way with words. When their music isn't overstuffed with pile-driven polyrhythms, bottom-feeding bass lines and cluttering guitar scrawl, it's a slower experiment within spare, icier surroundings. Darediablo succeed on the strength of their stripped-down rock three-piece. It's their unbelievable range of direct influences - from the 1950's "organ trio" model to the cock-rock of the 1970s to spaghetti western soundtracks to modern (but not "Nu") metal. And as their latest album, "Twenty Paces", makes clear, damn near everything in between. |

| 6.03.05 | Thus | First
Friday Artwalk: Art Bites Buffet Dinner, catered by Morpheus Eats. Served at 7:30p, $8/person
|
The works in guest-curator Denise Markonish's "Boys Life" follow the progression from boy to manhood. The artists in the exhibition address stereotypically male centered hobbies, skewing the notion of what they mean to society by adding humor, social commentary and art historical references to create works that are both about masculine activities as well as their link to more generalized ideas of manhood. In the front window we feature Cathy McLaurin's "what haunts ..." -- an interactive exhibition of people's secrets revealed. |

| 6.04.05 | Sat | Hollow Mountain Music: Ponies in the Surf
|
Ponies in the Surf play pretty, minimalist acoustic pop songs that hearken towards all kinds of folk music traditions of the past, from children's music to religious folk to the music of Columbia, where the duo grew up. They sing with both a child-like playfulness and an accomplished sense for melody. Carlisle Sound includes present and former members of Major Stars, Soltero and Pants Yell, bringing vintage psych pop into the future. Portland-based Certain Numbers represents the domestic arm of the british invasion. |

A self-described "painter with lyrics," Brooklyn-based maverick visual artist Andy Friedman projects his paintings, drawings, and photographs onstage to accompany his country-blues styled songs about devotion and wanderlust. Medeski Martin & Wood bassist Chris Wood and brother Oliver Wood tour playing what can best be described as "a blues-based, Americana. Oliver sings and plays guitar and, as MMW fans know, Chris lays down the bass. They are just getting started, don't miss your chance to catch their first real tour! | 6.11.05 | Sat | Sara Cox with Graham Isaacson and Jon Nolan 8:30, $7, 18+
|
Sara Cox "is the assured storyteller, teasing the lines into a recognizable time and space." (No Depression). "Cox isn't content to confine herself to any particular style...she dodges disjointedness simply by the grace of her distinct sound and uncomplicated, yet versatile character..." (Harp Magazine). To categorize Graham as a typical singer-songwriter would miss the point. His music evokes feelings of intimacy, truth, and heartfelt emotion, using delicately crafted songs structured around interesting chord progressions and Grammy caliber arrangements. Jon Nolan plays smart and introspective americana/pop, anchored by his stirring and brilliantly emotive vocals, earnest songwriting, enviable guitar tone and a crack band of New England Roots-Rock heavies. |
