First Friday: Light in the Dark |
Light In the Dark is a group show of works in
sculpture, photography, video, new media and performance. Working with light
as a medium, the artists had each discovered that it is inherently ethereal,
barely there, dreamy, and suggestive of spirit beyond form--yet always seeking
form to define itself.. As a result, the show examines how the 15 artists
have captured and pinned down light to form. Works include illuminated photography
or night lights, projection onto mist or ice, and a three dimensional painting
on plexi-glass. Most use electricity, some use humor, and some respond to
war. The show runs from January 7 to February 25. 5p-9p, free, All ages |

Kate Katomski is an artist who divides her time
between New York and Portland. Her multimedia sculpture installations involve
a synthesis between architectural history, film technique, and sound and
object making. Her work typically explores relationships between interior
and exterior space, and between personal history and current historical

"Word Wars" focuses on four of the
highest-ranked Scrabble players and their journey to the 2002 National Scrabble
Championship in San Diego. The film won "Best Documentary" at
the Sedona (Arizona) Film Festival in March 2004, and the "Audience
Award" at the Full Frame Documentary Festival (Durham, North Carolina)

Experimental indie popsters Spouse have been
winning fans over since the mid-nineties with their frenetic rhythms, soaring
sonics and enchanting melodies. A recent "Village Voice" review
of their latest album "Are You Gonna Kiss or Wave Goodbye?" called
called out the "emo-like indie anonymousness done by seven people of
both sexes, including sometime players of glockenspiels and "noise
devices," though there's nothing particularly noisy about their album."
