Exquisite Corpse

Exquisite Corpse is a drawing game in which an illustration is collectively assembled. Popular amoung French Surrealists, the game places in artists in situations of surprise and celebrates chance, coincidince and odd pairings. Each participating artist draws an image on a sheet of paper and then folds the paper to conceal the drawing before passing it along to the next person. The resulting artwork is unpredictable, linking absurd and often nonsensical images together.

For this iteration of Exquisite Corpse, seven artists will create a collabrative drawing on the walls of the gallery. Each week, a new artist will enter the space with only limited knowledge of what came before. Material choices and approaches will vary widely from artist to artist.

All have been given the phrase “the apartment” ahead of time as a framework for the drawing. The term itself might suggest home to some and transience to others. Over the course of the installation, each participant will find ways to approach this topic from all angles. The result is a long, linked installation, a “drawing” that features conjoined domestic and architectural spaces.

A public unveiling, artist talk and reception will take place on Saturday, July 15th from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.
