Working hard to perfect their lines, the artists included in Steady Work, Will Sears, Pat Corrigan, Josh Luke, Kenji Nakayama, and Jimmy "Spike" Birmingham, employ themselves as sign painters; a tradition that is experiencing a renaissance of sorts after a sweeping replacement of hand painted signs for faster, cheaper vinyl and digitally printed signage. In a world where mass production trumps the hand made object, sign painting as a trade is almost a novelty. The high level of craft and technique involved means that these signs cannot be produced quickly; they are works of art worthy of contemplation in their own right. Steady Work offers a glimpse into the methodology, aesthetics, theory and practice of contemporary sign painting.
Major support for Steady Work comes from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
