Surabhi Ghosh Artist Talk

INFO
Monday, August 21 2017
7:00 PM TO 8:00 PM

In a talk titled “Now to then, there to here / Then to now, here to there,” Surabhi Ghosh will discuss her work as part of an impossible quest to understand what it means to be a member of the South Asian diaspora. After drawing a circuitous path between creative methods, material studies, historical research, and personal background, she will introduce a work-in-progress: a textile installation for the SPACE Window that references garlands, cultural rituals, and competing nationalist narratives.

Surabhi Ghosh is an artist and educator based in Montreal, Quebec. Her current work investigates the transmission of culture to diasporic people, specifically South Asian immigrants and their descendants in North America. She uses textiles, patterns, and site-responsive installations to materialize contradictory narratives which begin and end in her own experiences. In 2017, her work has been on view at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle and FOFA Gallery at Concordia University in Montreal. She is currently an artist-in-residence at SPACE, where she is grappling with the relationship between her ongoing historical research and her studio practice.
