Guidelines and Procedure for submitting material to SPACE

Before submitting your idea, please take a moment to think about SPACE's mission:
To present contemporary, unconventional, and emerging arts, artists and ideas. We prefer to work on events that add to our community, especially events that might not otherwise get presented in Maine. We strive to present artistic excellence and we believe that artists should be paid for their work whenever possible.

Please note that we generally like to hear / see content before presenting it at SPACE. Currently, we're booking 8-20 weeks ahead. We occasionally book last minute events and we occasionally book months and months ahead.

We publish our printed calendar of events on the 15th of the month prior to the event. Please send all relevant publicity materials by the 8th of the month prior so that we can use them for promotions.

If you're looking to show visual artworks click here.
If you're looking to book music, theater, or other performanc events click here.
If you're looking to screen a film or video, click here.
If you want to co-present an event, or if you want to rent SPACE for a private event, click here.

Please allow two weeks after sending your proposal and follow up with either a phone call to us at 207.828.5600, or an email to the appropriate department.

We evaluate events based on thoughtfulness and creativity as well as appropriateness to SPACE's vision and mission. Because we receive numerous proposals and have limited staff resources, we can't always respond to everyone. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

FOR MUSIC, THEATER, and OTHER PERFORMANCE

Please include a statement of intent describing the nature of the event, a list of preferred dates and times, anticipated requirements (seating, PA, stage, bar, AV projection, staffing, etc...). We like having a lead time of THREE MONTHS to allow us to properly consider and promote the event. Weblinks are especially helpful to us in evaluating your proposal.

If you are booking a music event, please include links to audio samples for each group/performer. Theater and other performing arts should send a synopsis/script of the performance, with links to video samples when available. Links to bios, reviews, etc. are especially helpful to us in evaluating your proposal.
Send music/performance inquiries to: bookings@space538.org

FOR FILM and VIDEO SCREENINGS

Film/Video screening inquiries should be sent to screenings@space538.org, and we'll determine if you should mail a DVD of the material to be screened.

TO PARTNER WITH SPACE ON AN EVENT, or to rent SPACE for your event:

We often partner with other organizations to present programs, and occasionally we rent SPACE to other nonprofit groups, corporate parties, or private individuals for their own events. We do NOT generally rent SPACE for booking of public events -- i.e., you can't pay to have your band play here. When inquiriing, please provide as much of the following info as you can:

Email inquiries are preferred. Please don't call and ask us how much we'll charge before we know what you are trying to do. Send inquiries to: info@space538.org

Rates will depend on what's required for time, equipment and staff. We offer discounts to nonprofit organizations, but as we are nonprofit ourselves we are not able to donate use of our room for your events. Thanks for your understanding.

SPACE is run by a small staff and lots of volunteer hours. While we strive to do all we can to promote our calendar of events, you can help us generate attendance by participating in the promotions process. WE REALLY LOVE being provided with flyers and posters for events! If you are able to create or provide your own promotional print materials, it saves our staff a big chunk of time and work. Included is a fairly complete list of print and radio resources in Maine. We encourage you to contact as many as you are able to with press releases, bios and audio/visual samples for promotion. Thanks for helping SPACE help you.
